Senior Living Resident Profile

Assisted living and nursing homes are much different. A male or female senior can be placed in an assisted living home which is for those who do not need intensive medical care, but still needs the companionship with some day-to-day activities. When it comes to assisted living, there is a certain profile that exists. The National Center for Assisted Living has put out some statistics about the typical resident within these communities. Below is a list of these statistics.

The typical assisted living resident is a woman who is about 87 years of age. That person is also mobile, with about two or three basic living activities. She usually has about two or three of the Top 10 chronic conditions.

In a study that was conducted in 2010, 54% of these residents were 85 years and older, 7% were 75-84 years of age, 9% were between the ages 65-74, and 11% are younger than 65 years of age. In terms of gender, substantial amounts were woman, more specific, 74% of these residents were woman and the rest male.

In terms of daily activities, there are about 4 in particular that senior citizens could have trouble with. These activities include bathing, dressing and toileting, transferring, and eating. Out of these activities about 72% of residents need help with bathing. There are other common services that over 80% of residents need help with. These are help with food preparation and managing medication.

In addition to the following statistics for the typical assisted living residents, there are some chronic conditions that are more prominent than others. These include; high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, Heart Disease, Depression, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Diabetes, COPD, Cancer, and Stroke.  Out of these high blood pressure is the most common. About 57% of these residents have this chronic condition.

After the elderly have lived in assisted living, they usually either go on to nursing homes or goes home to live with family. In general, seniors only stay in assisted living centers for a small length of time.
