Senior Relaxation Tips

Senior Relaxation Tips

As we grow older, our lives can bring different stresses and tensions through out the year. Especially as seniors, it’s important that we understand how to cope with our stress and anxiety and bring it down to a healthy level. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you relax.

Visualization Techniques

Visualization is a great way of taking your thoughts away from whatever is seeming to make you feel stressed or anxious. You can practice and train your mind to feel that it’s relaxed even during situations in which you normally aren’t. Try to visualize in very detailed smells, sounds, sights, and feelings that you would normally experience in a location that makes you feel comfortable and safe, such as home or on vacation.

From personal to professional, there are a large number of hypnosis relaxation techniques available today. These will often help guide your mind away from thoughts that are making you anxious or stressed and can aid you in moving through certain methods to help you relax, for example: progressive muscle relaxation. Many of these techniques are available for free or for a low cost on the internet or a local bookstore. There are also many hypnotherapists available for a more professional level. Make sure you choose the right one for you and your specific issue.

Breathing Techniques

If you become overstressed, you may often find yourself coming to the point of hyperventilating. Next time you feel on the brink of hyperventilation, instead of using deep breathing techniques, try to use this relaxation tip for those anxious moments: Time your breathing. Breathe in for the count of 5 and out for the count of 7. Extending your out-breath will often help relax your body’s nervous system and the counting will allow you to focus on something else. Another breathing technique is the diaphragmatic breathing technique. To do this, you should visualize that you are breathing with your stomach rather than with your chest. Your stomach should be able to rise and fall each time you are breathing in and out. These breathing techniques will help you feel less anxious about your health, finances, or any sort of big event coming up.

Sleep Improvement

Although not necessarily a relaxation technique, getting the right amount of sleep is crucial for keeping you mentally and physically relaxed. If you are like many adults in the world, you don’t need as much sleep as you did when you were younger. However, whenever we do not get enough sleep, you are more prone to anxiety and because of this, may struggle to sleep at all. You should write down your worries and concerns in a journal to clear your mind, avoid caffeine, and only exercise early in the day.

Trying to use these relaxation tips may be able to help with your anxiety and help you in feeling calm and relaxed in stressful situations.
